Mr. Color Maker Review (TOMY)

What It Is

Mr. Color Maker is an interactive, electronic preschool toy that engages kids in color-based play. The toy comes with the Mr. Color Maker base unit and three primary color paint jars and a connected paintbrush. To start, open the lid and take out the paint cans. Mr. Color Maker has three modes of play, and he'll start in one of them randomly when you get him going. In Play mode, kids can pretend to pour paint into the unit and it will light up in that color. Pouring another color into the can will create a secondary color, and Mr. Color Maker will encourage kids to stir it up so it lights up in the new color. In the second mode, kids can learn to mix colors following the prompts from the toy. And in the final mode, kids stir the paint as they hear a rainbow song and see the colors of the rainbow. To switch between modes, simply close and open the lid. The toy will shut off automatically if it's not played with for a minute or so.

Is It Fun?

An engineer could probably tell you exactly how this works, but 2-year-olds will be totally enchanted by the seeming magic, the bright colors, and the interactivity. We like the sleek design and the opportunities for put-and-take play as well as the amazing color change, which really uses just primary and secondary colors. This is a very well-made toy that's ergonomically and cognitively appropriate for kids 2 and up. We really haven't seen anything like it.
