Rock'em Sock'em Robots Review (Mattel)

What It Is

Rock'em Sock'em Robots is one of the quintessential baby boomer toys. It originally came out in the 1960s, and now today's kids can battle robots thanks to a re-launch of the original Rock'em Sock'em Robots from Mattel. Just like the original, it comes with two robots: Blue Bomber and Red Rocker. However, this version is half the size of the original. To battle, press down on the hand grips to make the robots throw punches. If you knock your opponent's head off first, you win.

Is It Fun?

Parents and grandparents who remember playing this game as kids will love being able to share the fun with their own kids or grandkids.

Who It’s For

Rock'em Sock'em Robots is for ages 6 and up. It's especially great for those who love nostalgia.

What To Be Aware Of

This toy takes five minutes to assemble.

This is a loud toy, especially when kids are really going at it.

Because it's a smaller size, the robots don't have as much room to battle, and they end up simply smacking together. We found that this crashing action can cause the robots' heads to pop up even if a player hasn't landed a punch correctly. We found that a little bit disappointing because it changes the nature of the competition.
