The Deluxe Activity Set Read & Write Series for the LeapReader is an innovative new reading and writing system that really does help kids learn both essential skills in fun, engaging, and age-appropriate ways. This system combines interactive stories about characters named Dot, Dash, Curlicue, and others with the basics of upstrokes, downstrokes, and relative size. If you have the LeapReader pen, sold separately, the first thing you'll need to do is download the content into the LeapReader through LeapFrog Connect. Then children first practice tracing, then following a dash line, then writing freehand. The LeapReader gives them feedback and encouragement on how they do. The tip of the LeapReader makes marks on the special paper, just like it was a pencil, so kids can see their writing. The front of the book has a picture of the correct tripod grip for use by left- and right-handed individuals.
Most parents know that handwriting is not being taught today at the level it was even a few years ago, and yet it's an important skill. Just like your teacher told you, when you write things down, you remember them better. So, that means that writing basics are critical for kids. While parents or caregivers may want to get involved and provide encouragement as kids learn, the system is actually self-contained and easy for kids to follow. We think they'll be proud of what they can achieve. For today's kids, this is a pedagogically sound writing curriculum that makes learning fun, interactive, and effective.
The LeapReader Deluxe Activity Set Read & Write Series is for ages 4–8.
In this review, we focus just on the writing part of the LeapReader. You can see our review of the basic LeapReader unit separately.
