You may already know the Perplexus Twist because it's been around for a few years, but it's now being made by a new company, Spin Master. If you know the original, the first thing you'll notice is that it's a little bit smaller. When we opened it, we thought the twisting mechanism was not quite as smooth, but as we played with it, it got a lot easier. Beyond that, it's the same intriguing, engaging, and maddening puzzle as the original. The object is to get the metal ball through the maze by balancing and rolling it along the numbered tracks. The twist in that version is literally just that. You have to twist the tracks inside the ball to match up the sequentially numbered tracks.
This is the most difficult of the Perplexus puzzles and with good reason. It takes time and a steady hand to work the ball through the maze, and you'll find yourself having to start over fairly often. One of the things we really like about this is that the play is slow and very meditation-like. We won't go so far as to say it's a Zen experience but it's pretty close, though some people might find it frustrating. So, calm your nerves, steady your hands, and get ready for the full Perplexus experience.
Perplexus Twist is for ages 8 and up.
We wish the tracks were a little more clearly marked, so we recommend taking a few moments to familiarize yourself with the path before you start to play.
Other Perplexus puzzles include Rookie, the original Perplexus, and Epic. Each has a different difficulty level and is sold separately.
