Boom Boom Balloon Review (Spin Master)

What It Is

Boom Boom Balloon is a skill-and-action game where players try not to pop the balloon. The gameplay is simple. Blow up one of the included balloons and insert it into the frame. Wind the bottom of the balloon around the base to keep the air in, then put all the sticks into the holes on the frame and push in until you hear one click. On your turn, roll the die to see how many clicks you have to push in a stick. For example, if you roll a one, you can push in any one of the sticks until you hear it click once. It starts out pretty easily, but as the game goes on and each player has to push the sticks in farther, the tension starts to mount until someone pops the balloon. The game comes with 12 balloons. When play is done, the unit is easy to take apart and store in the box. The game is for two or more players.

Is It Fun?

We've played this with a lot of people, and we have yet to see anyone, kid or adult, not cringe when they push in the sticks. It's kind of a dread and excitement sort of thing, as well as being glad when you get through your turn without popping the balloon. Balloon popping is classic fun, and parents or grandparents may remember Ideal's Kaboom from 1965. Then as now, the simple excitement, ever-more challenging choices, and the sudden pop are classic fun.

Who It’s For

Boom Boom Balloon is for ages 8 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

Spin Master suggests using a balloon pump but because we didn't have one, we just blew it up the old-fashioned way: using our own breath.

Spin Master also recommends ordering replacement balloons from them. Believe it or not, these are not your typical balloons. These are a little bit thicker than traditional balloons, which makes them stand up to the poking a little bit longer.
