Elmo Loves 123s is an iPad app starring Sesame Street characters Elmo and Abby Cadabby. Throughout this robust app, Elmo and Abby work with kids to learn a variety of math skills using the numbers 1 through 20.
Kids get started by tapping on Abby or exploring a favorite number with Elmo. After choosing a number, Elmo prompts kids to trace the number on the screen. This is not really a writing experience but more exposure as kids can just color all over the number and the app responds positively. After the drawing experience, kids learn about the given number by watching Sesame Street number videos, interacting with coloring pages or playing one of three number games including puzzles, drag and drop counting, and number seek and find.
At any time, go back to the number screen and tap on Abby for a different kind of number play. Abby needs help solving math word problems to complete a task, such as getting the twittle bugs to the roller skating rink or the chickens to the disco. Through these tasks, kids are working on a series of activities that include the number sense concepts of one to one correspondence, adding more and taking away.
Parents also have an information page for keeping track of their child's play. This page is only available if you close out of the app and go back in, so kids can't easily access it. Parents get a summary of what numbers have been practiced and the percentages correct. I love how the app tells what your child's favorite number and activity is based on how frequently activities in the app are played.
This is a robust app that gets kids working on math skills in a fun way. Kids will enjoy interacting with Elmo and Abby through the app's activities.
Elmo Loves 123s is an excellent app for kids 3–6 who are still interested in playing with Elmo and friends. The app is completely child-safe with no links or ads.
This app is compatible with the iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later.
