Barbie Fashion Design Plates Review (Mattel)

What It Is

With the Barbie Fashion Design Plates, Mattel puts a new spin on the classic mix and match stamp plates that have enjoyed a long history in illustrating popular fashion and fashion play. The basic concept was to rub a marker or any marking tool over the raised design plates then transferring the pattern to paper to color in. Mattel has applied the concept to designing dresses for Barbie.

Kids can choose a dress design by placing three of the mix and match plates into the included dress frame. Then slide the dress over the dress frame and place the charcoal transfer sheet face down on the dress. Put the top on the frame to hold it in place and rub with the included tool to transfer the plates' pattern onto the dress. Kids can then use the included markers and stickers to further customize their design.

The set includes one doll, six double-sided fashion plates, three Barbie dresses, markers, stickers, and three sheets of charcoal transfer paper.

Is It Fun?

Fans of Barbie and fashion play will like that they can design customized dresses for their dolls. And because each design plate is double-sided, there are multiple different design combinations to create to make unique dress designs.

Who It’s For

The Barbie Fashion Design Plates is for ages 5 and up.

This doll and activity is best suited for kids who have the patience and ability to pay close attention to detail to get the most out of the toy and get the best results.

What To Be Aware Of

While the transfer works really well, young kids will need help putting the dress on the frame, which is a tight fit. And once the dress is off the design frame it's difficult to color the dress with the markers because the fabric pulls and gathers as you color. There are black forms included in the packaging that aren't mentioned in the directions. When you stretch the dress over it coloring became a little easier, but we still had difficulty coloring with the markers.

The grey transfer chalk can also start to look dirty as kids color and move their hands over the fabric.
