When Nintendo released the first Wii it came with Wii Sports, which was a collection of mini-games designed to teach people how to play games on the Wii. For the Wii U, the latest console, Nintendo created Nintendo Land, a game that teaches you the basics but also stands alone as a great collection of mini-games.
There are 12 different attractions in that lead to the different games. Each attraction is themed on a popular Nintendo game, like Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Zelda and Metroid, and they are all accessed from a central hub called the plaza.
The games themselves are a blast and all have been rendered in a cute, cartoon-like style that even makes throwing ninja stars at enemies look adorable, which is exactly what you do in the Takamaru’s Ninja Castle attraction.
Each game utilizes the GamePad’s unique functions in some way. In Yoshi’s Fruit Cart, you have to use the stylus to draw a line on the touch-screen that will guide Yoshi on your TV from a start point to the finish. In Donkey Kong’s Crash Course you tilt the GamePad back and forth to get a cart to ride along an elaborate track system. In Metroid Blast you use the GamePad to search the room around you for enemies and blast them before they get you.
Nine of the attractions can be played by a single player and the remaining three are designed for 2 to 5 people to play together, which makes it a great solo or party game.
This is a great first game for anyone who has recently purchased a Wii U. Each attraction is very different from the other and there is bound to be something on this game that will appeal to everyone in your house – from the youngest gamer to the oldest.
The plaza is more than just a start screen – it’s also an interactive area where you can chat with other players from around the planet using your Mii and your Miiverse friends. It’s like the Mii Plaza on the original Wii but with other people’s Miis visiting and chatting with you. The Miiverse feature also lets you leave notes for specific attractions that other people will see when they play that attraction.
Nintendo Land is a Wii U exclusive and will not work on Wii.
