LEGO Legends of Chima Boulder Bowling Review (LEGO)

What It Is

With the Boulder Bowling set, part of the new Legends of Chima building theme, kids can help King Crominus escape the cave. The story behind Legends of Chima is that, at one time, human-like animals lived together in harmony. Chima was once a paradise, but heavily armed barbarian species have changed it, and now best friends have become enemies, fighting over a powerful natural resource called CHI. It is the source of life, but if put in the wrong hands, it can also lead to destruction.

This 93-piece set lets kids blast through the boulders and free King Crominus in a Speedorz race for six CHI. Attach King Crominus onto the croc Speedor, pull the rip cord, aim for the ramp, and blast through the boulders. You can place the CHI orb inside one of the boulders and try to break the boulder open to release the CHI orb. Attach the power-up to make the Speedor wider for more boulder-bashing power.

The player who knocks down the most boulders gets to flip a game card and choose a battle power: instinct, speed, courage, or strength. The second player chooses a different game card and the same battle power as the first player. Compare the two battle powers on the cards. The player with the highest power wins two CHI. So if the first player chooses instinct, which has a power of 40 on one card, and the second player's card gives instinct a power of 50, the second player would score the two CHI. Also, when you flip a card, you may pay one CHI to add a CHI bonus to the battle powers designated on the card. The player to collect six CHI first is the winner.

The set includes a King Crominus minifigure with two weapons, a Speedor, a rip cord, a power-up, six CHI, a CHI orb, and five game cards. This set can be combined with the Legends of Chima Ring of Fire and CHI Waterfall sets, which are sold separately.

Is It Fun?

This is an action-packed set that lets kids build the action, practice their Speedor skills, and play out the Legends of Chima storyline. Kids can compete against friends to knock down the boulders and collect the most CHI.

There is a bit of a learning curve to launching the Speedor. Kids won't knock down boulders every time, but that's part of the play.

Who It’s For

The Legends of Chima Boulder Bowling set is for ages 6–12.

What To Be Aware Of

This set took us 30 minutes to assemble, and the building instructions were very easy to follow.

It's difficult to break open the boulder containing the CHI orb, or any boulder for that matter, unless the boulder falls from a high distance. Unfortunately, even the boulder at the highest level on this playset is not high enough to break it open.
