What It Is

In honor of the Magic Tree House series’ 20th anniversary, Random House has published a special full-color edition of the very first book—Dinosaurs Before Dark. The series is set around a brother and sister who find a tree house in the woods that’s filled with books. Young Jack opens a book about dinosaurs and the siblings are transported to prehistoric times. The two meet all kinds of dinosaurs and learn which are good and bad, before they are whisked back to present day.

For the past 20 years, Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House series has been taking kids on fantasy-filled journeys to historical places, events and more. This special edition is in full color and has updated facts about dinosaurs. which will appeal to both girls and boys. Ms. Osborne’s blend of adventure, history and even danger are a great way for children to learn about all kinds of things, from dinosaurs to ancient China and even the Titanic.

Who It’s For

Age seven is a great entry point for this series. With 48 books in the series and new ones coming out each year, there’s bound to be at least one that will get a child reading on his or her own.

What To Be Aware Of

This edition is available only in hardcover at a relatively pricey $14.99. However, other books in the series have great illustrations and are available in a variety of print, digital and even audio formats, and can easily be found in school and local libraries.
