SpellingCity Review (SpellingCity)

What It Is

SpellingCity is a free vocabulary app that gives kids a fun place to practice their spelling lists and adults an app and online resource for making custom lists and tracking their child's progress. There are eight spelling games in the app. In Hang Mouse, kids think through their spelling list while trying to fill in the letter blanks of a challenge word. You only get seven guesses. Get the letter correct and the mouse gets some cheese. If you choose a letter not in the word, you'll start to see the cat slowly wake up and catch the mouse.

There are two unscramble games, Word Unscramble and Sentence Unscramble. With Word Unscramble, you drag and drop letters to build one of the spelling words from your list. The app doesn't just reinforce spelling but also word meaning. Sentence Unscramble has kids pulling down words to recreate a sentence that uses a spelling word from their list.

The Spelling-TestMe part of the app allows parents to choose the list and words for kids to spell on the app. Kids can replay the word and hear it in a sentence as many times as they like.

Along with creating custom lists, parents and teachers can use any of the preloaded lists or tap the "find more lists" button for easy searching right in the app.

There is a Premium Membership for the app that we highly recommend looking into. The Premium Membership allows parents and teachers to get more activities on the app, to track test results and other activities, and assign specific work to students. The management of all these features is currently web-based only. The annual membership, good for five students, is $29.99, which is bought directly from spellingcity.com.

Is It Fun?

Between the SpellingCity app and its website, parents will find thousands of spelling lists and many activities for kids to learn their spelling words from Kindergarten through high school. The games within the app will keep kids coming back to the app and website again and again for learning their spelling words.
