The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Escape from Mirkwood Spiders Review (LEGO)

What It Is

Kids can follow Fili the Dwarf and Kili the Dwarf deep into the dark and scary Mirkwood Forest with the Escape from Mirkwood Spiders building set, based on the movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which hits theaters December 14, 2012. With this 298-piece set, kids can attack the heroes with three small spiders and two giant spiders with glow-in-the-dark eyes and moving legs, then trap Kili and Fili inside cocoon elements high up in the buildable tree. Use Legolas Greenleaf and Tauriel to save the day by battling the spiders and freeing the dwarves with the tipping function. There is also a spider attack function and glow-in-the-dark mushrooms and small spider. The set includes four minifigures (Fili, Kili, Legolas, and Tauriel) with assorted weapons. Each minifigure has two faces, so kids can turn their heads to show either an everyday face or a battle face. And because dwarves are smaller than elves, the dwarf minifigures are smaller than Legolas and Tauriel.

Is It Fun?

This set has lots of great detail and features that fans and collectors will appreciate. The tree-tipping and spider attack functions add action to the set and let kids play out the scene from the movie.

Who It’s For

The Escape from Mirkwood Spiders set is for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fans ages 8-14.

What To Be Aware Of

It took us between 35 and 40 minutes to assemble this set. The instructions were very easy to follow. The pieces come in two separate bags. The assembly booklet includes step-by-step instructions on how to build using the first bag and then using the second bag. Don't mix the pieces from the two bags or building will become confusing.
