The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters on December 14, 2012. For fans who can't wait until then, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Adventure Board Game lets fans play out the action from the movie. This official game retells the movie's story as two to 15 players take on roles of characters from the film.
The object is to get the entire company of dwarves to the Eagle Eyrie space. If any of the company perish before reaching that space, the game is over and the evil forces have won. If the adventure is completed successfully, the winner is the player who has scored the most Good Points.
Each player chooses a character and receives a character card with information on that character's life, strength, magic, and wisdom points. All 15 character pieces begin on the Hobbiton space, even if you have fewer than 15 players. Players take turns rolling the two white dice to determine how many spaces they can move around the board. They can choose one number to move their own character and use the other number to move a free character, or a character that is not assigned to any player.
If you land on an event card space, take an event card that matches the color of the space. You might earn extra wisdom points, move extra spaces around the board, or have to answer a riddle.
If you land on a space that touches an enemy token space, you'll need to turn over the token, find the enemy card that matches the number on the token, and battle the enemy. You battle by rolling the dice and adding the numbers to your character's strength or magic points and the enemy's strength or magic points. Whoever has the highest number wins the battle. You can also choose to run from battle by rolling the white dice to see how many spaces you can run away from the enemy.
The game comes with 11 hexagonal playing board pieces, 15 character pawns, 15 plastic bases, 49 evil forces tokens, two white dice, two black dice, 100 cards, a score pad, and rules.
Fans of The Hobbit will enjoy playing out the adventure and pretending to be characters from the movie. Because the battles rely on rolling dice, there's no skill involved in playing. This makes the battles not as exciting as kids might be expecting.
It's also important to read the instructions thoroughly. We have only given you a brief rundown of how to play, but there are other elements to the gameplay that make it more complicated. Older fans of The Hobbit will most likely enjoy playing this game, while it might frustrate younger fans.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Adventure Board Game is for ages 8 and up.
It takes several minutes to set up the game each time you play.
