Word on the Street Review (Out of the Box)

What It Is

The object of Word on the Street is to capture letter tiles by selecting words that contain the desired letters and pulling the letters off of the street before the opposing team can pull them back. To start, place each letter tile on the corresponding letter on the board's Median Strip (middle lane). Select which side of the category cards will be used for the game. The blue side is more challenging than the green side. Teams take turns flipping over a category card and brainstorming words that fit the category. The team must agree on a word and pull each letter tile that is in that word one lane closer to their side of the street on the board, all before the time runs out. The first team to capture eight letter tiles wins.

Word on the Street comes with 17 letter tiles, 216 category cards (432 categories), a divider card, a card tray, two 30-second timers, a game board, and rules. It is for two to 10 players.

Is It Fun?

Word on the Street is a fast-paced game that challenges players to use their vocabularies and choose words strategically. If your team has letters that are one lane away from being captured, you'll want to choose a word that includes those letters so your team can capture them. It gets more challenging to come up with words toward the end of the game when there are fewer letter tiles to work with.

Who It’s For

Word on the Street is for ages 10 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

The vowels A, E, I, O, and U, and the letters J, Q, X, and Z were excluded from the game board to streamline the game.

If you already own Word on the Street, you can expand the gameplay with the Word on the Street Expansion 1. This expansion pack comes with 432 new categories, a deluxe card tray, and a sand timer. As in the original game, the blue side of the cards is more challenging than the green side. The Word on the Street Expansion 1 is $15.99. It is for ages 13 and up.
