Kerflip! is a new fast-paced word game that is played right inside the game box. The object is to be the player with the most points at the end of the game. To earn points, you must create words of three or more letters using letter tiles.
To start, players blindly draw letter tiles from the pouch. The number of tiles each player chooses depends on the number of players. Then everyone drops their tiles onto the board and quickly flips them over so the tiles' ivory sides face up. Each player races to call out one word using any of the letter tiles. The first player to do so turns over his timer. All the other players have until that timer runs out to call out a different word. The second player to call out a word turns over his timer, and now the remaining players have until that timer runs out to call out a word.
Once all players have called a word or the active timer expires, move on to the scoring stage. Players are scored in the order that they called a word. Ivory tiles are worth 10 points each, so the first player scores 10 points for each tile in their word. Then those tiles get flipped over to reveal their orange side. Those orange tiles are now worth only five points, so if the other players used those letters in their words, they will only score five for those tiles. Any players who didn't call a word score zero for the round.
Some letter tiles have tiny numbers in the bottom right-hand corner. If you use one of these letters in your word, you get to draw the number of bonus cards on the tile. (If your tile says "2", draw two bonus cards.) Bonus cards can give you extra points, although some cards are worth zero points. The bonus numbers are only on the ivory side of the tiles. So if you use a bonus tile in your word but that tile gets turned over because somebody before you used it, you don't get the bonus cards.
Once all players' scores for the round are recorded, recycle any remaining ivory tiles back into the draw pouch. Sweep the orange tiles off the board and into the tile return chutes. The game ends when any player is unable to draw his full allotment of tiles at the beginning of a round. Players then add any points earned from their bonus cards to their scores. Whoever has the most total points wins.
Game cleanup is almost as much fun as playing the game. Make sure all the tiles have been swept into the tile chutes. Place the board and tile cup in their places in the box. Then hold the game box upright and shake gently to settle the tiles into the tile cup. Lift back the board, remove the cup, pour the tiles into the pouch, and you're done.
Kerflip! comes with 90 letter tiles, a draw pouch, 22 cards, four sand timers, a game board, a tile cup, and rules. The game is for two to four players, and we think it's more fun with three or four players.
This is a fun new take on word games. We like that you play right in the game box and that the box has been designed to make cleanup easy. No more picking up letter tiles a few at a time and dropping or losing them in the process. Kerflip! is a fast-paced game that challenges players to create words and think strategically. For the most points, you'll want to make a word using tiles nobody else has used, but don't take too long to find that word or you won't score any points.
Kerflip! is for ages 8 and up.
Kerflip! is available in specialty stores and online at Kerflip.com and Amazon.com.
