Kel Gilligan’s Daredevil Stunt Show Review (Abrams Books)

What It Is

New from Michael Buckley, author of the middle grade Sisters Grimm and NERDS series, is this hilarious picture book that stars a fearless young lad named Kel Gilligan. Kel narrates the story as he attempts his “stunts” with Evel Knievel–like flair. The “stunts” are common kid “obstacles” such as eating broccoli, using the potty for the first time and, the holy grail of all parents – not interrupting while mom is on the phone!

Is It Fun?

The story unfolds as a performance so readers at home will feel like part of the audience as Kel accomplishes his feats. Parents and kids will love to “ooh,” “ahh” and “gasp!” along with Kel’s family. Kel Gilligan truly is what a picture book should be – it’s interactive and encourages everyone to be very silly. Plus, the story is a great way to encourage kids to laugh at their fears and celebrate their bravery, no matter how ordinary. And, the real bonus will be when your own little daredevil heroically tackles a plate of veggies at his next meal.

Who It’s For

This book is perfect for boys and girls as early as preschool. It’s really one the whole family should enjoy and is one of my favorite 2012 releases.

What To Be Aware Of

It’s only available in hardcover for $16.95. However, it’s got strong “read again” appeal, which makes it a great selection or gift.
