Grow Your Own Mushroom Garden Review (Back to the Roots)

What It Is

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can still grow mushrooms with the Grow Your Own Mushroom Garden. This self-contained kit uses recycled coffee grounds as soil. Just mist a few times a day, and the mushrooms begin to grow right inside the brown box package. You can grow up to one and a half pounds of pearl oyster mushrooms, then cook and eat them.

Open the front panel of the box and cut a + in the soil bag. Remove the bag from the box and submerge it in water for 12 hours. Then place the bag back in the box, and place the box indoors away from direct sunlight. Mist the bag with water twice a day. In as little as 10 days, the mushrooms will begin to grow through the cut-out panel on the box. Harvest the mushroom caps when they are between one and 1.5 inches in diameter. Then turn the box around and repeat these steps for the other side to get a second harvest of mushrooms. The kit comes with a mini spray bottle.

Is It Fun?

The Back to the Roots mission is to make food personal again, and the Grow Your Own Mushroom Garden lets kids and families easily start their own home garden. Kids may be intrigued watching the mushrooms grow, and see up close where a popular food item comes from. This kit is a great way to engage kids in growing and making food. And the kit's compact size makes it great for families with small kitchens or who live in urban spaces.

Who It’s For

The Grow Your Own Mushroom Garden is recommended for all ages. Adult supervision and participation is recommended when using the kit with young children. And really, adult participation is recommended for kids of all ages because this kit is designed to be an activity for the whole family to do together.

What To Be Aware Of

It's important that you follow the instructions to ensure that your mushrooms grow correctly. We messed up at first and caused our mushrooms to grow through the top of the box instead of through the cut-out side panel.

Make sure the kit is placed out of direct sunlight and away from heaters or air conditioners. The kit will do best in a shady spot with fresh, cool air that won't dry it out.

When you mist the mushrooms, gently lift up the plastic flaps of the bag and make sure to mist under there. If the mushrooms or roots start to look a bit brown, this means they're starting to dry out, so give them some extra spritzes.

When you harvest the mushrooms, cut them cleanly off with a sharp knife. Don't pull them off. If you cut them cleanly, you may be able to harvest a second, smaller crop from the same side of the box.
