Angry Birds Mega Smash Game is the third tabletop game from Mattel based on the popular Angry Birds app series. In Mega Smash, the object is to be the first person to get 1,000 points. In order to score points, you must knock down pigs.
On your turn, choose a mission card. There are four levels of mission cards. Level one is easier to shoot down than level two, and level two is easier to shoot down than level three. Level four is freestyle, so players can use the building blocks, pigs, and bonus pieces shown on the card to create their own structure. Once you've chosen a card, give it to the next player. He will build the structure and you will shoot it down. Place the launcher at least one foot away from the front of the completed structure. The mission card lists what birds to use to shoot down the structure. You must shoot the birds in the order shown on the card. (If a bird is shown twice on a card, you'll use the same bird twice.) Place a bird into the launcher, hold the launcher down with one hand, and pull down on the slingshot with the other. Let the slingshot go to launch the bird into the structure. All of the pigs must be knocked over to get the points. Keep the mission card to keep track of your score. If you're not successful, move the mission card to the discard pile. If you do knock over all the pigs, you may also collect points for any bonus pieces you've knocked over. Take a 100 point card for each bonus piece. You don't get any points for girders knocked down or leftover birds. The first player to reach 1,000 points after an equal number of turns wins.
The game comes with four Angry Birds (one blue, one white, one black, and one yellow), four pigs, a bonus points star, a bonus points egg, 17 building blocks (five large girders, six small girders, two snappable ice girders, two wood cubes, and two triangles), a bird launcher, 32 mission cards, and eight points cards. Mega Smash is for two to four players.
Angry Birds Mega Smash has elements that are derived from the app, but it interprets the app in a way that works as a real world skill-and-action game. It adds a social, interactive dimension to the electronic game, and it fosters cooperation because kids can work together to build the structures on each turn. The competition and the build-it-knock-it-down action is perfectly positioned for younger kids.
Just like the smartphone app, there is a slight learning curve to Mega Smash. It's a little tough at first to launch the birds, so it may take some time and patience to become an expert bird launcher. However, it largely uses motor skills and force so, unlike the app, which requires some level of strategic thinking and (however obscure) understanding of physics, this is a game that kids in the target age group can feel successful playing.
Angry Birds Mega Smash Game is for ages 5 and up.
The game is available exclusively at Toys "R" Us.
Do not aim the birds at eyes or faces. Only use the projectiles supplied with this toy. Do not fire at point blank range.
