Lots of families play the license plate game when traveling, and pl8s (pronounced "plates") gives you a way to keep score while learning fun facts about the states. In this app game, each player attempts to be the first to spot a license plate. When you spot a license plate, simply touch that state's name within the app, and then you'll get a fun fact about that state. Each state flag is pictured next to its name. There are two different game options. In option one, each license plate is worth one to three points based on your current location and the population of each state. In option two, each license plate is worth one point. All 50 states and Washington, D.C. are included in the game. The app also lets players Tweet about the plates as they find them. Touching the map icon will show where all the cars you've spotted are from. pl8s is for one to four players, and each player is tracked on the app. To switch between players to record a license plate, simply touch that player's name and then the correct state.
With pl8s, parents can make the car ride more fun for the kids or relive their days in the back of the station wagon. At only $0.99, this is a great value and it comes just in time for summer travel. It's easy to play and delivers exactly what it promises. It's a great way to use the technology of an iPhone to complement a classic family activity.
pl8s is not age-graded, but it will be fun for kids 6 and up (and adults) to play.
The app can be played on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. However, option one of the game utilizes the location-based functionality of an iPhone or iPad with a data package.
The app has not been optimized for the iPad, so to play on the iPad, touch the "2X" button on the lower right of the screen. The resolution is satisfactory when the app is blown up.
