Dr. Seuss' Wish for a Fish app from Oceanhouse Media takes kids on an undersea journey with Dick, Sally, and the Cat in the Hat, and inspires kids to read, learn, and interact as they move through the story. The app gives readers the story in three modes: Read to Me, in which the narrator reads the story aloud and the child helps move the story along by swiping the pages; Read it Myself, which has sound effects but no narration or highlighting of words; and Auto Play, which allows the book to play through as the child follows along. Each mode is appropriate for different levels of learning and reading process.
Combining rhyming fun that is synonymous with Dr. Seuss, this is also a sophisticated, interactive learning app that covers scientific concepts and undersea biology in an age-appropriate and engaging way. Kids can explore the different levels of the ocean and the various creatures that inhabit each one. Kids will learn, for instance, the difference between different types of whales as well as an introduction to the food chain. There are interactive diagrams of the science concepts and bold words can be tapped to access facts and definitions. Tapping on the illustrations will also help kids learn the words behind each image.
We really like the the original illustrations, the gentle pace of the story, and that it puts the user in charge of the experience. There are additional elements to explore on each page, such as touching the different pictures to see words associated with each image. This takes advantage of the way kids naturally play with apps without getting in the way of the story.
The app is designed for kids ages 6-8.
You also have the option to record the story and use that as the narration for Auto Play.
