Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas Review (Schwartz & Wade Books)

What It Is

Elizabeth is an elephant seal who made her home in the Avon River in Christchurch, New Zealand. Elizabeth has a penchant for stretching out across the city streets to lie in the hot sun. This worries the citizens, and a group of volunteers tows her out to sea to be with other elephant seals. But Elizabeth soon returns to the city. So, they try again and again, each time towing her a little farther, but Elizabeth finds her way home every time, even if it takes her months to return.

Is It Fun?

Seals are fascinating creatures and always popular with kids at any zoo, so they are likely to be riveted to this story. While touring the banks of the Avon River, the author was told this tale by two children who were on the lookout for Elizabeth. After hearing it, she knew this would be the subject of her first children's book. The illustrations are fantastic, and Elizabeth's story is one that generations of children should enjoy.

Who It’s For
