The Storm Whale Review (Henry Holt and Company Books for Young Readers)

What It Is

The Storm Whale is a 32-page book by Benji Davies that tells the story of a little boy named Noi who lives with his father by the sea. Noi's father works long hours as a fisherman, and Noi is pretty lonely. So when he finds a baby whale washed up on the beach after a storm, he decides to take it home to care for it. He tries to keep his new friend a secret, but there's only so long you can keep a whale in the bathtub without your dad finding out. Noi understands that the whale has to go back to the sea where it belongs but the incident has made his father aware of his son's loneliness. He helps Noi return the whale and starts to spend more time with his son.

Is It Fun?

Although Noi's loneliness is a little sad, the story has a happy ending and it beautifully illustrates and explores the themes of friendship and loneliness in a way that isn't scary for a young child.

Who It’s For
