Odd One Out: Happy Angry Sad Review (Clavis Books)

What It Is

Odd One Out: Happy Angry Sad is an 18-page board book written and illustrated by Guido van Genechten. Each spread in the book features nearly identical animals and asks preschoolers to identify certain feelings among the animals pictured. Kids are also asked to find animals with specific physical characteristics or animals performing a specific action, such as the spider with an extra leg or the frog that's waving. On each page, there's also one animal carrying or wearing something in preparation for going on a winter holiday. Kids are asked to point them out, as well, and then all of those animals can be seen having fun on a snowy mountain at the end of the book.

Is It Fun?

While finding physical characteristics and specific actions was easy, identifying the animals' feelings was difficult even for us as adults. Not only are readers likely to be confused by being asked to sort shy bears from very shy ones or surprised snakes from very surprised snakes, they also may find the differences in the animals' facial features too subtle to even guess the correct answer. We're wondering if there even is a correct answer or if the author wants us to keep guessing. Either way, kids are sure to need a lot of help with this book.
