Hip to Be Square Crochet Review (Alex)

What It Is

Alex's Hip to Be Square Crochet kit is designed to teach beginner crafters how to crochet granny squares and eventually piece them together into a hat or scarf. However, this is one hard kit to learn on, especially if you've never crocheted before. Crocheting is difficult to learn without actually seeing it in person or having someone assist you, and the directions for this kit did nothing to ease the process. We do think that once you get past the inner petals of the granny square, the craft becomes a lot easier to visualize and complete. It can also be hard to tell how tight to hold the yarn, which in terms of eventually stitching the squares together, can throw the design off if all your squares are uneven. We wish additional tips were provided for this. The end result will eventually yield a hat or scarf but, for beginners it's a long process.

The kit includes one finished crochet square that you can use as a template, 300-yards of yarn in six different colors, a crochet hook, plastic needle, and instructions. This crochet kit also comes with a storage tin.

Is It Fun?

While we are usually fans of Alex's crafts, we were really underwhelmed by this kit. In general, we think the directions are the real downfall, however we did think the materials provided are really high quality for beginners.

Who It’s For

Alex's Hip to Be Square Crochet kit is for ages 7 and up, but best suited for a child that won't get easily frustrated and is willing to put the time and focus into completing this craft.

What To Be Aware Of

Once we figured out how to properly stitch and double stitch into the circle, it took us about 35 minutes to complete, with a little extra guidance from YouTube.
