Twosomes: Love Poems from the Animal Kingdom Review (Alfred A. Knopf)

What It Is

Twosomes: Love Poems from the Animal Kingdom imagines what animals would say if they celebrated Valentine's Day. Each page includes a two-line poem by Marilyn Singer accompanied by a funny illustration of the animals by Lee Wildish. The funny and punny poems imagine how the animals might declare their love, affection, or friendship. For example, the horses might say, "Nose to nose, hip to hip, ours is a stable relationship." And elephants might say, "I like your tusks, I like your trunk. I like your size—you're quite a hunk."

Is It Fun?

This is a funny little book that would make a great Valentine's Day gift for a young child. Through 15 different animals, from dogs and cats to chameleons and sharks, these poems and illustrations will make kids and adults chuckle. It might even inspire kids to write some of their own animal love poems.

Who It’s For

This book is not age-graded, but we think it's appropriate for ages 4–6. Adults might understand the puns more than kids.
