KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat Review (Chicco)

What It Is

Installing a car seat properly in your car is key to your child's safety, and the KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat is a rear-facing car seat that makes it a little easier to install. Like most car seats, there are two ways to install the base: the latch system or seat belt. The KeyFit 30 has a spring-assisted level foot and a center pull latch adjustment that not only make it easier to install, but also ensure that you've installed it correctly, which is really the most important thing. There are even bubble levels on both sides of the base so you can see that it's at the correct angle. Once the base is installed, the carrier easily clicks into the base.

There are a lot of safety features to this car seat, and hopefully you won't need to use these, but just in case of an accident, it's great to know they do exist. Energy-absorbing foam provides extra impact protection. There is also a removable insert for smaller babies between 4–11 pounds, which offers extra support around the head, neck, and back, and also makes babies more secure in the seat itself. The seat pad is thickly cushioned, and there's a five-point harness, so in addition to safety, these also provide additional comfort for baby, which is great for those long car rides.

The harness straps have three adjustable heights so you can change it as your baby grows. To loosen the straps, press the orange button. Once your baby is secured, pull the grey strap to tighten. You would also adjust the chest bar accordingly, and it should be about armpit height.

The infant carrier itself easily detaches by lifting the orange handle in the back. And then you can carry your baby around in it. It also weighs less than 20 pounds, but keep in mind that it feels a lot heavier once you have an actual baby in it.

When you want to put the carrier down, the handle has three positions: up for carrying, back, and stand, which keeps the carrier from rocking. In the carry or back positions, you can rock the carrier, which is a great feature if you want to rock your baby to sleep.

There is also a retractable canopy shade, though this one is pretty stiff and not the easiest to adjust. We wish it came out farther because as it is now, it won't provide much sun protection.

There are 19 different styles of the KeyFit 30 to choose from, each with its own unique color combination and pattern.
