Kids can take their dollhouse with them on the go with the AppVentures iDollhouse. This dollhouse-themed iPad case comes with a little girl figure and is used in conjunction with the iDollhouse app, which is a 99 cent download from the Apple App Store. (There is a rebate with the purchase of the iDollhouse case so the app potentially ends up being free if you buy the toy.) Follow the instructions to load the iPad into the case (You'll need a dime.), and open the app to bring preschoolers their own virtual dollhouse. The app has four rooms to explore, plus the outside of the front of the house and the backyard. There are more than 50 activities, including redesigning the house, redecorating and painting rooms, feeding the pet parrot, using the fireplace, watching TV in the living room, cooking and baking in the kitchen, riding a seesaw, watering plants, playing dress-up, and flushing the toilet. Kids can use photos from the iPad's photo gallery in the picture frames throughout the virtual dollhouse. Kids can also choose different characters in the house or scan the QR code on the little girl figure to make her appear on the screen.
We love the concept of kids being able to play with a dollhouse anywhere without having to bring 1,000 pieces along. You can use the app without the iDollhouse case, but the case adds to the fun making it seem more like a real dollhouse, and the case protects the iPad while you're child is playing.
The AppVentures iDollhouse is for ages 3 and up.
It may take a few tries to figure out how to use the app's menu, but once you get the hang of it, it is easy to use.
There is a smaller version of the dollhouse case for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It retails for $14.99.
An AppVentures iFirehouse is also available.
