With the LEGO Super Hero Movie Maker app, kids can create their own LEGO movies on the iPhone, iPad, or iPad Touch. Simple tools and guides make it easy to shoot, edit, and add music to a LEGO stop-motion movie. Choose which LEGO building sets and minifigures (sold separately) you want to use, then get them built and set up. Once your scene is ready, use your devices camera to take a picture. Then move your figures into their next pose and take another picture. Keep moving figures and snapping pictures until you have all of the scenes you want for your movie. When you're done shooting, add and delete frames to the movie, choose from five different soundtracks, and add a color filter to create different effects. Add one of the 11 customizable title cards, save the movie to your camera roll, and then you can share the movie with family and friends. (Users cannot share their movies directly through the app. You'll have to save it to your device's camera roll and pick your preferred method of sharing, such as attaching it to an email or uploading it to a Facebook account.) LEGO plans to update the app for more LEGO Super Heroes fun.
The LEGO Super Hero Movie Maker app merges digital play with physical toys. It gives kids a new way to play with their LEGO building sets. The graphics within the app are mainly LEGO DC Superheroes, but kids can use any LEGO building set or non-LEGO toys they want. The stop-motion movies can be as detailed or as basic as kids want, depending on the skill level of the child and how much time he or she wants to spend manipulating the minifigures into specific poses. But no matter what your child's movie looks like, the act of creating his own movie will be very satisfying. And he'll love sharing his work with family and friends, as well as creating even more movie adventures for his LEGO toys.
This toy is an idea for kids who love building and creating narrative play scenarios and who are interested in and have some level of knowledge of using technology. Mostly, it's as easy as taking a picture, but there is some learning involved. (LEGO introduced a movie-making toy several years ago that used the family video camera.)
The LEGO Super Hero Movie Maker is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (3rd generation), iPod Touch (4th generation), and iPad. It requires iOS 4.3 or later.
The app is age-graded for 4 and up. Parental supervision is recommended, not only to get kids and parents playing together, but also to help kids share their completed movies. If your child wants to upload the movie to Facebook, remember that the minimum age for an account is 13, so kids younger than that may have to use a parent's account. Parents are strongly advised to monitor their children's online activities.
