Weekend Box Office: Super 8 has So-So Opening

Super 8, a mysterious movie shrouded in a an enigma of a marketing campaign opened over the weekend and while it pulled in a decent $37 million, it wasn’t the super-duper opening that a Spielberg and Abrams movie should have commanded. I’d like to tell you what the movie is about but I haven’t seen it yet and the only thing that I have learned from the trailers is that some kids are making a movie with an old fashioned camera and then a train crashes and loses it’s cargo of weird Rubik’s Cubes. Time To Play’s film critic, Cynthia Fuchs, has seen Super 8 so you can read her review and find out what this movie is about (don’t spoil it for me).

One movie that I have seen (and loved) is X-Men: First Class, which captured another $25 million in it’s second weekend out. This origins story that tells us how the first group of X-Men got together dropped 55 percent from it’s opening weekend tally, which was the second-smallest percentage drop for an X-Men movie. X2: X-Men United lost 53 percent from the first to second weekend and the first X-Men movie dropped 57 percent.

In third place, The Hangover Part II made an estimated $18.5 million and crossed the $200 million mark in just 16 days. The Hangover Part II has now cruised past Fast Five and become the highest grossing film of 2011.

Kung Fu Panda 2 kicked up another $16.6 million in fourth place while The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, also sailed across the $200 million mark with another $10.8 million box office tally.
