Box Office, Hunger Games Mockingjay Biggest Debut of 2014

In completely unsurprising news, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, easily claimed the top spot on the Box Office list with a $123 million debut. That is the biggest opening of the year (so far), but significantly lower than the first two Hunger Games movies. The first movie opened to $152 million, and Catching Fire took in $158 million in it’s opening weekend.

Big Hero 6 landed in a distant 2nd place with $20.1 million, which is more than $100 million less than Mockingjay. Interstellar touched down in 3rd place with $15.1 million, and last week’s #1 movie, Dumb and Dumber To, plummeted to 4th with $13.8 million in it’s second weekend out. Gone Girl rounded out the Top 5.
