The LEGO Movie MetalBeard’s Duel Review (LEGO)

The LEGO Movie MetalBeard’s Duel
What It Is

The LEGO Movie: MetalBeard's Duel from LEGO is a 412-piece building set from The LEGO Movie. The set builds Metal Beard the pirate, the Micro Manager robot and three minifigures: Skeletron, Robo SWAT and Frank the Foreman.

The character, MetalBeard, lost his body parts in a battle with the movie's villain, Lord Business so MetalBeard rebuilt his body from old ship scraps. The MetalBeard figure is filled with lots of funny details that perfectly summarize his ship scraps story. One of his arms is two cannons that fire the torpedoes that can be stored on his ship's wheel. The other arm is a shark with working claw fingers. MetalBeard's legs, which along with his torso are movable, are made from more scraps including a barrel and anchor. No pirate would be complete without his parrot and treasure chest and in MetalBeard's case, his treasure chest is literally, his chest.

The Micro Manager robot has moveable legs and claw arms plus it's hatch opens so the Robo Swat minifigure can control it from inside. It also has two flick missiles that can be flipped out and fired.

Is It Fun?

Kids will get a kick out of the way MetalBeard has been put together and the various unique LEGO pieces. Whether or not they have seen the movie, there's a lot of imaginative play built into these figures that will work with other LEGO sets or action figures.

Who It’s For

This set is recommended for LEGO fans, ages 8 to 14. However, given the content of the movie, it's most likely to appeal to kids at the younger end of the age spectrum. Kids who have seen the movie will recognize the characters but you don't have to see the movie to enjoy this set.

What To Be Aware Of

The directions are excellent and most LEGO builders should be able to complete this set in about 45 minutes.
