The latest woman to be featured in Mattel’s Inspiring Women Series comes just in time for February’s Black History Month and March’s Women’s History Month. The Ida B. Wells doll celebrates the life of the journalist, activist, and suffragist who lived from 1862 to 1931. Sculpted to Ida’s likeness, the doll wears a long-sleeved, very dark navy blue dress (it almost looks black) with a high lacy collar. Her black hair is pulled back into a bun, mimicking the hairstyle Ida wears in the black-and-white photo on the doll’s packaging. The doll comes with a Memphis Free Speech newspaper accessory, which was the paper Ida became editor and co-owner of in her late 20s. Girls can read more about Ms. Wells on the back of the box, such as how she was born into slavery, started her career as a teacher, and co-founded the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The doll comes with a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity.

Should I get it?
We like Mattel’s choice to include Ida B. Wells in its lineup of female role models. This whole series of dolls is a great way to introduce today’s girls to historic women and inspire girls with these women’s stories. This doll is a wonderful tribute to the formidable activist, and one that older Barbie fans will also want to collect.
