The aesthetic of BrickHeadz is very clear: big head, small body. “Chibi proportions,” is a term that fits the bill very well. Colors are broken up into pleasingly simplified graphic shapes, abstracting the subjects into cartoon-like caricatures. They’re very blocky, but by design. The compactness is part of the charm. As you may expect for such a simplified design, there are virtually no areas of articulation. That isn’t the point of BrickHeadz sets though, so no harm, no foul. Cockatiel does have one articulation point for it’s crest, which is very cute.

As mentioned, Cockatiel and Chick come with the bricks to build these two characters, as well as a base with two perches, and two interchangeable placards with slightly different designs. Overall, what you see on the box, is what you get inside. We also have Disney’s most wealthy water fowl, Scrooge McDuck, and his precocious nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie from Ducktails fame. I really enjoy the attention to detail on Scrooge, with his spectacles and cane. Each character has a modest black base to help them stand, which is a nice touch. Lastly, we have Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. The hair on the characters is very well designed, as well as Hagrids duds, umbrella, and magnificent forehead.

The quality of the prior sets bodes well for these others. Keep your eyes peeled for the Pets Hamster and Baby Hamster, which also includes a base and placards. Also check out LEGO Ninjago, which comes with Golden Lloyd, Nya Samurai X, and Firstbourne Dragon. This is probably the most successful BrickHeadz set, design-wise. The character designs lend themselves particularly well to this small reinterpretation. These sets are all little, quick builds, lasting most builders between 20 and 40 minutes, just enough time for a relaxing crafty activity.
