Choose the colors to crack the code. That's the premise of Roto Brain, a mind-twisting hand-held puzzle game with three levels of difficulty. The Roto Brain unit is unlocked by a secret three-color combination, but can you guess what that color combination is?
Each difficulty level corresponds to one of the color rows on the game unit. To start, you'll hold the device with the level 3 row facing your left hand and the level 1 row facing your right hand. You'll want to make sure the white arrows are on top. Then, rotate level 1 two times clockwise and move to your first selected color. From there, rotate level 1 counterclockwise one full rotation, and then move to your second color choice. Then rotate level 1 clockwise by going directly to your final color choice.
If you cracked the code, the black piston on top will pop up one level. Then, you can move onto unlocking level two and level three. Once you've solved all levels, you can reset it and even create your own Roto Brain combinations for your friends to solve.
This is a pretty challenging game. The movement of the device reminds us a little of solving a Rubik's Cube mixed with opening a locker. Before you start, you might want to make a chart of all possible color combinations and keep track of which combinations you've tried until you find the right one. The game box says this has "endless hours of puzzling fun", and judging by the fact that we played with this for hours and still couldn't solve the first level, "endless hours" is correct. Whether or not it's fun will depend on if you like solving these types of puzzles.
Roto Brain is for ages 8 and up.
More details about solving, resetting, and creating combinations will be at the Roto Brain website, which was not available at the time of this review.
