OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Build out the story from your favorite Eric Carle book with the Magna-Tiles The Very Hungry Caterpillar magnetic construction set. The 16 pieces are double-sided with numbers, pictures, and words from the familiar children's book on each side. The tiles are scratch-resistant to ensure the illustrations aren't damaged during play.

There are no real building instructions, but it's fairly simple to understand how the tiles go together. They connect on any side and stack magnetically. So you could use these on your fridge, too. To get the full developmental benefits of sequencing, number and color recognition, and problem solving, a parent will need to participate in the play, perhaps building a sequence of the number and food tiles while reading the story. It's also possible to build the entire caterpillar out of the tiles, and if you open up the guide book, there are picture instructions for building that.

And if you have other Magna-Tiles sets, these are compatible for more building play.

Is It Fun?

This is a unique way to make a children's storybook more interactive. With parent guidance, there are many ways to use these tiles, or kids can simply experiment with stacking and building the tiles, while working fine motor skills. The artwork looks just like you remember it from the book, so if The Very Hungry Caterpillar holds a special place on your family's bookshelf, you'll enjoy bringing the story to life through this construction set.
