These ladybugs won't be grouchy when they find a home in your home. Based on the Eric Carle book The Grouchy Ladybug, The World of Eric Carle The Grouchy Ladybug Growing Kit allows kids to grow real Pink Spotted Ladybugs.
Inside the box, you get a habitat with a Grouchy Ladybug sticker on the front, a feeding dropper, instructions, and a voucher for live ladybug larvae. You'll need to visit the Insect Lore website to enter the code on the voucher and have the larvae shipped to you. A $7.95 shipping fee is required.
Once you get the larvae, transfer them to the ladybug habitat and watch them crawl around inside. Every other day, drop two drops of water on the sponge inside the habitat's volcano. Then, after a week, the larvae will attach themselves to the walls of the habitat and transform into pupae. And five to seven days after that, the ladybugs will hatch from the pupae and become adult ladybugs, with their red backs and black spots. Feed them cut-up raisins that have been soaked in water and observe their movements within the habitat. You can only keep them in the habitat for about a week after they become adults, and then you'll need to release them outside.
But the habitat can be reused. Just purchase more live ladybug larvae refills from the Insect Lore website and do it all over again.
This would be a wonderful activity to do in conjunction with reading The Grouchy Ladybug book. And it's a fun at-home activity to keep the science learning going during the summer. It's easy for kids to care for the ladybugs, with some adult help, and it helps introduce basic pet care.
The instructions say it will take about a week for the larvae to go into the pupae stage. It took our larvae about a week and a half before any of them started to change. This will be an activity that requires patience, but it really is neat (and sometimes gross) to see it all happen.
The Grouchy Ladybug Growing Kit is for ages 4 and up. Younger kids might need assistance from an adult when feeding the ladybugs.
The kit includes a Grouchy Ladybug habitat with water reservoir "volcano", a voucher to redeem 10 to 12 ladybug larvae, a quick guide, and a feeding dropper.
While the ladybug larvae are free with the purchase of this kit, you do have to pay $7.95 in shipping. Taxes may also apply.
