With the Disney Frozen 2 Coding Kit, it's almost like kids harness the ice magic powers of Elsa. Using a motion sensor that connects to an app, kids simply wave their hand to make and play with snow, harness the wind, change the seasons, and more. And all of the play incorporates coding skills.
The kit includes the pieces needed to build the motion sensor: PCB + Sensors, a light plate, a power button, two AA batteries, a top case, and a bottom case. Step into the unknown and follow the instructions to assemble the motion sensor. As kids build, they also read about infrared beams, how the sensors detect your hand, and how your movements move things on the screen.
Once assembled, download the free app and connect it to the sensor using Bluetooth. Once in the app, there are three categories of challenges to complete, with a fourth one on the way. Kids will probably want to start here to become familiar with how the app and the sensor work. Challenge themes include Create Snow, Frozen Fractals All Around, and Olaf's Snowtime. Within each theme, there are several challenges to complete. Once you complete a challenge, you can move on to the next one. These challenges aim at getting kids comfortable with the coding process and learning all that they can do with the app. Anna, Elsa, and other favorite characters guide the whole process.
The code that kids create in these challenges gets saved to the My Creations part of the app. From there kids can edit their creations and even share them with others in the Kano World community. Kids can also go to the Create section and code whatever they want. These creations can also be shared.
And in the app's Explore section, kids can see and play with what other users have coded.
Kids can even customize their avatar, choosing different skin and hair colors, funny facial expressions, and companions.
Frozen fans will love pretending to be Elsa as they go through the challenges and watch snowflakes and blizzards appear on-screen. It definitely feels like magic when kids see things happen in the app based on a wave of their hand. With the ability to create their own code and play with other user-generated code, there is a lot for kids to play through even after they've completed all the challenges. This STEM toy adds some tech to the magic of Frozen.
The Disney Frozen 2 Coding Kit is for Frozen fans ages 6 and up.
Two AA batteries are included.
The app works on compatible iPads, Macs, Windows 10 computers, Fire 10 tablets, and selected other devices. It will not work on smartphones due to the smaller size of the screen.
Kids will need parent permission to share their creations in the Kano World community.
