Give kids a hands-on introduction to robotics with the Build-a-Bot line of build-your-own robotic pets. Whether you choose to build a Dalmatian or a Unicorn, each kit includes more than 20 pieces that easily click together for a satisfying building experience for young kids. And as kids build, they'll read about engineering concepts, such as motors, levers, and sound, and how they work.
Follow the instructions to snap the numbered pieces together, and once complete, you can customize the look of your robot pet with different eye and decorative stickers. The Dalmatian has paw prints, stars, bones, and dog food. There is also an adoption certificate to fill out, recording the build date, pet name, place of build, and owner's name.
But this is a robot, so it will move and make sounds. Turn on the pet and lift its tail for hopping and sounds. The pet will even respond to sounds, such as clapping.
These are pretty easy-to-build robotics kits that introduce STEM concepts to kids in a fun and hands-on way. What we really like is that some of the body parts are translucent, giving kids a glimpse at how the mechanics of the robot are working when their pet is in motion. The animals are also very cute, and kids will like customizing their pets with the stickers.
The Build-a-Bot kits are for ages 4 to 12. Kids between the ages of 4 and 7 will need some help, but kids ages 8 to 12 will be able to build these on their own.
Each Build-a-Bot requires two AA batteries, which are not included.
It took us 10 minutes to build one, and the instructions were pretty easy to follow.
A Build-a-Bot Kitten is also available and sold separately.
