OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Remember a time when all you could do with your Tamagotchi was feed it, play little games, and clean up its poop? All that is changing with TamagotchiON, the next generation of the interactive virtual pet.

This is different from the originals in several ways. TamagotchiON has digital colored screens with millions of different Tamagotchi characters. And you can feed your Tama at home or at a restaurant, go shopping in and travel to different lands, and even take care of a TamaPet. You can also connect your device to a friend's device to go on playdates, travel together, and even get married. And when the married Tamagotchis have babies, the babies look like both their mom and dad. Plus, if you connect this to the free app, you can expand to other characters, join Tama events, engage in geo-location play, and more.

Of course, the classic play of cleaning, bathroom, and games are still there. You start off by hatching your Tamagotchi from an egg, and as you play and interact with it, it will grow from baby to child to teenager to adult. There are three buttons on the front of the device that help you control what happens. If you're on the home screen, and you press the "A" button, a menu will pop up with different things you can make your Tamagotchi do: meal and snack, bathroom, connection, family, explore my town, travel to other town, item box, notebook, and first aid kit. Press the "B" button to select.

A lot of the play with this is exploring all the different options and discovering what your Tamagotchi can do. Will you feed your Tama food from the fridge or go out to a restaurant? Will you connect your Tamagotchi with another Tamagotchi or with the app? Will you play a game, earn in-game currency, and buy your Tamagotchi a nice meal, an upgraded room, or fun accessories? Will you explore the world outside your Tamagotchi's front yard? There's a lot to do!

Just like the originals, there is the potential for your Tamagotchi to get sick and die. If you don't get out the first aid kit in time, don't worry. You can hatch a new Tamagotchi.

There are four colors to collect: Fairy Pink, Fairy Blue, Magic Purple, and Magic Green. Each is sold separately and has fun designs on the cover, such as rainbows and hearts or rainbows and stars.

Is It Fun?

There is so much more to do with TamagotchiON than with previous versions of Tamagotchi. This still offers the same nurturing play as the original, and that will really appeal to kids who like digital pets, but this version has more interactivity and play, which is a good thing for kids. Today's kids will also like the color screens, and the connectivity between their Tamagotchi and a friend's, which lets kids kind of play together, or between their Tamagotchi and the app, which opens up a whole new community.

Who It’s For

TamagotchiON is for ages 6 and up. This will be fun for kids who like playing with digital pets.
