It's time to choose your side, your LEGO Hidden Side. Merging augmented reality with physical construction sets, LEGO Hidden Side offers a whole new world of interactive LEGO building and play. The ghost-themed sets are fun to build, and introduce kids to Jack and Parker, LEGO characters who can see ghosts through an app on their mobile phones. Kids can also become ghost hunters and see the ghosts through their smart devices thanks to the LEGO Hidden Side app.
There are a variety of Hidden Side sets to build and collect, and in this video review, we're showing you two of them. The Graveyard Mystery construction set comes with 335 pieces for building a graveyard scene, complete with twisting tombstone statue, opening graves, and a haunted tree with poseable arms. Open the door to find a utility room and a bucket of tools. The graveyard gates also open and close. There are four minifigures in this set: Parker, Jack, Mr. Branson, and a Skeleton. Both Jack and Parker carry cell phones so they can see the ghosts, and the skeleton carries a green key. The three human minifigures each have two facial expressions, easily changed by turning the head. There's also a ghost head and hair accessory that can be placed on the Mr. Branson minifigure. The set also includes Jack's ghost dog, Spencer.
The Paranormal Intercept Bus 3000 construction set comes with 689 pieces for building a tricked-out school bus and a portable toilet that turns into a ghost monster. From inside the school bus, you can pull out the command center and flip out de-haunting cannons from either side. There are also rooftop scanners that spin, and space inside the school bus for four minifigures to sit. The "School Bus" sign on the front of the bus has the letters "S" and "H" crossed out to make the sign read "Cool Bus". To change the toilet into a monster, open up the door and push down its sharp teeth, flip up its eyes from the top, and add safety cone legs. Launch brown disc projectiles from the slot in the center of the toilet monster. This set includes six minifigures: Jack and Parker with cell phones, Worker Bill and Worker Nanna with construction accessories and extra ghost faces, J.B. with cell phone accessory blaster, and ghost dog Spencer. These figures also have two facial expressions that change when you turn the head.
There's a lot of play with just the construction sets, but then you add the LEGO Hidden Side app. When holding the app up to the set, you'll transform it into a haunted version of itself. There are interactive mysteries and challenges to solve as kids look for "points of possession" and capture the virtual ghosts. The app will add new ghosts, game challenges, and randomization in the gameplay to keep kids coming back to their models.
If you don't have any of the construction sets or don't wish to use them for the play, you can choose to play the app as a ghost through a series of short digital games independent of the building sets.
We like how this allows kids to keep one hand in both the physical and digital worlds. LEGO building is still part of the play experience, but the app enhances and extends the play. Kids have a choice in how they play. They can build the sets and play out their own imaginative ghost stories with them, and each set is complete with lots of moving parts and fun details to make the creative play exciting. Kids can also use the app if they want a more game-like play experience or to enhance their ghost stories.
The Graveyard Mystery set is for ages 7 and up, while the Paranormal Intercept Bus 3000 set is for ages 8 and up.
It took half an hour to build the Graveyard Mystery set and one hour to build the Paranormal Intercept Bus 3000. Instructions were easy to follow.
The free LEGO Hidden Side app is for iOS devices running 6+ and Android devices on the ARCore supported list.
You can use the app on tablets, but the play experience is designed with phones in mind because it's easier to hold a phone in one hand while manipulating the set with the other hand.
Additional LEGO Hidden Side construction sets include J.B.'s Ghost Lab, Wrecked Shrimp Boat, El Fuego's Stunt Truck, Shrimp Shack Attack, Ghost Train Express, and Newbury Haunted High School. Each set is sold separately.
