OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Whether you're at home or on the go, you'll always be connected to your little ones with the Kodak Cherish C525 Smart Baby Monitor. It uses both a parent monitor and a free app to help busy parents check in on baby.

From the parent monitor, you'll be able to see what baby is doing and help soothe baby without having to go back into the room. Baby will be soothed when he hears you talking to him through the two-way communication feature. There are also five built-in lullabies or soothing sounds to play. The five-inch parent display provides an 85-degree viewing angle of baby's room, and pressing the arrow buttons on the parent unit will rotate the camera up and down. You also have the ability to zoom in through one of the menu settings. And if you insert an SD card into the camera, you can take photos or video of your baby. Set temperature notifications to be alerted if baby's room gets too cold or too warm. A light bar at the top of the monitor indicates the volume of sound coming from baby's room, and you'll hear the sound coming through the unit once sound has been detected. You can set the audio threshold through the VOX setting in the menu. The video button turns the screen on or off, so you can preserve battery life if you don't really need the screen to stay on.

If you use the app, which syncs up to the camera via wifi, you'll be able to do a lot of the same features but while you're at work or out for date night. Along with sound, motion, and temperature alerts, there's a two-way talk function, built-in soothing melodies, the ability to take photos and video of baby, and the functions to tilt, pan, and zoom the camera. All of your recorded footage will appear in your video gallery, and a timeline gives you a quick glance at sound and motion throughout the day.

No matter which device you use to view baby at night, the camera's infrared video provides a clear HD picture even when the lights are off.

Why Is It Useful?

This baby monitor definitely has potential, especially with the ability to use a parent unit for at-home use and an app for when you're out. If that's something that you need, then this is one of the only video monitors we've seen that offers that. It's fairly easy to use both, and we do like that the app offers a few more features than the parent unit. Both can be synced to the monitor at the same time, so you'll still get the timeline updates in the app even when you're primarily using the parent monitor.

Who It’s For

The Cherish C525 is for adult use. Parents who want to keep track of what baby is doing during naptime and bedtime will like the features of this video monitor.

What To Be Aware Of

Both the camera and parent unit can be plugged into the wall or run on rechargeable batteries. The camera has a battery life of five hours, while the parent unit's battery life is four hours.

The user guide doesn't include specific instructions for how to use the parent monitor. You'll need to access the full user guide on the Kodak website.

Sometimes the picture on the handheld screen would get scrambled, but watching a baby monitor is not like watching a movie, so it really wasn't that noticeable or problematic.

The camera can be wall mounted, but tools for that are not included.

The Kodak Smart Home app is a free download for iOS and Android devices.
