OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse (which occurred in 2018), LEGO designed the Steamboat Willie construction set, model number 21317, as part of its LEGO Ideas collection. Mickey Mouse made his debut in the 1928 black-and-white animated short Steamboat Willie, which was also the first Disney film to have synchronized sound. The LEGO brick version of the S.S. Willie has hidden working wheels on the bottom so that you can roll it along and watch the steam pipes go up and down and the paddle wheels rotate. There's space to place a minifigure behind the spinning wheel, and the set includes two minifigures of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Both of these are new-for-April-2019 with silver-colored decoration.

Other elements of the boat include an adjustable crane carrying a "potato bin", silver logos that say "S.S. Willie" and "1928", a brick-built bell, a flag that can be raised and lowered, buckets, a guitar, sheet music, and Mickey's parrot.

As a separate build, there's a Mickey Mouse display plate with the silver "1928" logo on the bottom.

And because this is part of the LEGO Ideas collection, the instruction booklet offers information about the LEGO fan who originally created the set and the two LEGO designers who brought it to life. You can also read about the history of Steamboat Willie.

Is It Fun?

This is such a cool-looking set that will be really fun for older Disney fans and collectors to build and display. We like that there are moving parts so you can pretend to sail Mickey and Minnie just like in the movie. If you're a Disney fan and you want to build a piece of Disney history, then this is the LEGO set for you.

Who It’s For

This construction set is for Disney fans ages 10 and up.

What To Be Aware Of

It took TTPM's Master Builder one hour and 30 minutes to build this set, and the instructions were easy to follow.

Because of the high price point, this is definitely more of a collector's item than something you would play with.
