OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

This is Holiday Fluxx, a holiday themed version of the classic card game, Fluxx from Looney Labs.

The gameplay remains the same as the original in this version only now all the cards, combinations you can make, and actions you can do are themed around the holidays: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving, and New Years.

Game Set-Up: Cards are shuffled and each player begins the game with three cards in his/her hand. Play moves clockwise.

How to Play:If you are unfamiliar with Fluxx, the game can seem a bit intimidating at first but it's actually really simple. Players start the game by following the Basic Rules Card on their turn: pick a card, play a card.

On your turn there are various cards you can play, depending on what's in your hand. Here's an overview of how each of these cards works:

  • Goal Cards: The game starts without a goal. But once one is placed at the center of the table, it becomes the "goal" all players are working to attain. Goal cards tell you what Keeper cards you need to collect and play in order to win. What makes the game interesting is that a Goal can change quickly. New goals replace previous goals and old goals get moved to the discard pile. Rules may allow for more than one goal to be in play (see more on this under Rules). The goals in this game are all themed around the holidays. For example, there's Trim the Tree or Happy Hanukkah! There's also some holiday goals for other fall/winter holidays such as Kwanzaa, New Years, Thanksgiving, and even Halloween thrown in.
  • Keeper Cards: Keeper Cards are the cards you'll need to collect to attain the goal. These are also holiday themed for the game. You may have Keeper cards in your hand but until they are played in front of you, you can not use them to get the goal. Sometimes Rules may limit the amount of keepers you can have in front of you.
  • Rule Cards: The game begins with by following the Basic Rule Card, however new rules can be introduced throughout the game that allow players to draw more cards on a turn, play more cards on a turn, replace cards in their hand, or impose limits on how many cards players can have in their hand. New rules can also clear old rules, replace the previous rules, or add onto those rules depending on what the card says.
  • Action Cards: Action cards further shaking up the gameplay by allowing players to switch hands with other players, draw extra cards to play right away, trash a keeper from another player's hand, etc.

There are also three Surprise Cards in the deck, which allows you to thwart the plans/and potential winning moves of other players---hold onto these cards!

Winning: The first player to gather the Keepers that correspond to the Goal in play wins.

Is It Fun?

Now if you are unfamiliar with Fluxx, the game can seem a bit intimidating at first but it's actually really simple and addictively fun. With goals changing on a whim and action cards, rule cards, and surprise cards constantly shaking up the gameplay, Fluxx is an aptly named game that keeps things interesting. It's simple to get started, making it easy for tabletop players at any level to jump in and start playing. But more so it's great for the depth and strategy that comes out as new rules and actions are introduced throughout the game.

Who It’s For

Holiday Fluxx is for ages 8 and up. The holiday theme added onto this classic card game makes it an easy go-to for seasonal gatherings with friends and family with gameplay lasting anywhere from 10 minutes on up depending on how competitive your fellow players get. We also like that it isn't a holiday-specific game and really does incorporate many different holiday and seasonal celebrations so it can work as a holiday gift for many players.

What To Be Aware Of

Fluxx can also be played with as little as two players and up to 8 players. We play tested it with the minimum as well as the max and the gameplay remained the same, without having to deal extra cards or adjust rules.
