OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

In celebration of the newest regeneration of the beloved Time Lord, Mattel has created the Barbie Doctor Who doll as part of the Barbie Signature collection, featuring the 13th Doctor and the first-ever female Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker.

Barbie has long been viewed as a lightning rod for hot topics across everything from politics to pop culture so it only makes sense that Barbie would take on the first female Doctor, who likewise has elicited heated debates amongst fans since it was first revealed the doctor would be female.

Mattel brings the majority of the details of the new Doctor's look to life. There's subtle details that call back to former Doctors, such as 11th Doctor Matt Smith's suspenders or the color scheme of fourth Doctor Tom Baker's scarf. If you've heard Whittaker talk at all about the meaning behind her ensemble, the look is also inspired by an old black and white photo she found online of a girl wearing cropped trousers, boots, suspenders, and tee---a comfy and non-gender specific look, she said. The only big detail missing is the violet lining inside the doctor's jacket. The doll's hair is pushed back behind her ear to reveal her signature earrings. The stars on the earrings represent where she comes from (space), and the clasps hands on her lob symbolize humanity. On the doll, these are pretty small and hard to make out---we've seen better jewelry details on other Barbie Signature dolls---but they are there.

The other key feature of the doll is the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, which has a completely updated look this season. The screwdriver is curved and looks more other worldly than those of past seasons. Notably, it features an amber tint, a change from the typical blue and green sonic screwdrivers of the past.

The doll is also fully posable with 12 points of articulation.

The back of the packaging includes a brief bio of the 13th Doctor as well as a glamour shot of the character.

Is It Fun?

Minus a few details, we think this is a pretty spot-on interpretation of the latest Doctor in the popular BBC series, Doctor Who. The facial sculpt is an especially uncanny likeness to actress Jodie Whittaker, and Mattel has done a great job at matching the details of her outfit as well as sonic screwdriver. In addition the backdrop equipped with the updated TARDIS also makes the doll pop on-shelf if left in package.

Who It’s For

Overall  we think this is a doll that's going to be a must-have for Doctor Who fans but keep in mind it is a Signature collection doll so it may be hard to get your hands on. Only 20,000 dolls will be available worldwide.

What To Be Aware Of

As part of the Barbie Signature collection this doll also comes with a stand for display as well as a certificate of authenticity.

This doll is a Gold Label doll in the collection, and thus has a limited production run of 20,000 worldwide.
