Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Epic Sewer Lair Playset Review (Playmates Toys)

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Epic Sewer Lair Playset
What It Is

When it's time to hit the sewer, you know there's TMNT action afoot. The Epic Sewer Lair from Playmates is an awesome, enormous playset based on the Nickelodeon series: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When assembled, the set is a whopping 43 inches tall with 4 levels to play on and 7 different rooms. It's packed with all kinds of play features. More than 20 in all. And all designed to encourage open-ended, narrative-based play with the heroes on the half shell.

The top is the New York Street Level with a secret rotating hydrant and a secret slide entrance to the Lair. Below, each of the turtles has his own room. Leo's has a rotating weapons rack. Ralph's has a workout bench launcher. Donnie can dock his lab, and Mikey's room has a slide escape. Just in case you need to make a fast exit. There are also trap doors, a villain holding cell, Splinter's dojo, two basketball hoops that activate a secret reveal and can collapse to defeat intruders, a collapsing balcony and so much more.

For Turtles fans, this is going to inspire a ton of play. The dramatic design and scale are particularly exciting for younger Turtles fans--though you'll obviously need the space to lay it out. Assembly should be done by an adult and takes on average 45 minutes.

There are no figures included with this set, so we've added some of our own for this review. But, we don't think that's a problem, really. After all, any kid who wants this toy probably already has a ton of turtles stuff. This is the kind of toy that really delivers an awesome play experience, and it's probably one that kids will remember for a long time. It is, as the name says, epic.

Is It Fun?
For TMNT fans, this is the biggest and most elaborate playset yet with tons of activities and lots to inspire co-play or solo play. Whether recreating scenes from the Nickelodeon show, or using the characters as a starting point for kids' own narratives, there are a lot of ways to bring this massive set to life through imaginative play.
Who It’s For
The Epic Sewer Lair is age graded for kids 4 years and up. It will appeal to kids who love their Turtles and love creating their own imaginative adventures with them.
What To Be Aware Of
As noted, the set takes about 45 minutes to assemble. Be sure to follow the sequence of the instructions carefully, particularly when it comes to applying labels. The sequence depicted in the instructions really will make it easier to get the whole thing together.

In order to open the manhole/trapdoor on the top level, you have to slide out the piece of the cardboard backdrop that rests on top of it. That should be pretty intuitive for kids.

Obviously, this needs a lot of floor space, and it doesn't fold up or collapse for storage.

All TMNT figures are sold separately.
