FurReal Munchin' Rex Review (Hasbro)

FurReal Munchin' Rex
What It Is

The FurReal Munchin' Rex from Hasbro is an interactive toy baby dinosaur named Rex. Part of the FurReal line, Rex features more than 35 different sound-and motion combinations depending on how you engage with him.

Rex is one picky eater which is why he comes with a few snack choices to feed his mood and his tummy. He'll hop around and beg in anticipation for his next treat, kind of like a puppy after a good walk. Simply wave at Rex to engage these features. Snack options include a piece of broccoli and a caveman cookie. If he likes it, he'll nom away on it. If not, he'll let you know and try to spit it out. But he's always ready to slurp on his bottle. Rex's sensors are located in his mouth (at the very front) and on his head. He also features motion detection. There is an on/off switch to power Rex down for some more prolonged nap time when not in use.

Is It Fun?

This cool dinosaur toy taps into the fantasy of not only caring for your own pet but caring for your own baby dinosaur. Rex's animatronics are especially great at bringing the hopping gestures of a raptor to life. In terms of dinosaurs, Rex definitely falls into the friendly/cute category so he won't be scary for kids like some other dino toys on the market, either.

One big thing, parents will need to consider, however, is price. At $90 (as of the timing of this review), parents will need to weigh whether this toy has enough features and interactions built-in to warrant that price aka will your child play with it long enough to warrant said price. The verdict is still out for us.

Who It’s For

The FurReal Munchin' Rex from Hasbro is for ages 4 and up. The FurReal Munchin' Rex is perfect for the kids that want everything to do with dinosaurs. Let's face it, dinosaurs might be extinct but our fascination with dinosaurs will never fade.

What To Be Aware Of

When you first get Rex out of the box, he'll likely be in try-me mode. Switch this and replace the try-me batteries for 4 new AAs.

We did have some difficulty at first getting Rex to recognize the different snacks for him to munch on. The sensor is located at the very front of his mouth so you don't need to press the snack in too far to yield a reaction.
