The ALEX D.I.Y. line from Alex Brands expands with the new Sew Corky collection, which merges its classic sewing craft kits with new cork inspired materials. Shown in this review are the Sew Corky Uni-Zebra Bag Charms Kit, the Sew Corky Sloth Plush Kit, and the Sew Corky Giraffe Plush Kit. These DIY craft kits focus in on trendy animals and mythical creatures, using the super sustainable and stylish material, cork, and, of course, you've got to have a bit of glitter.
With these kits, kids can sew together clip-on bag charms and plush character. With the Uni-Zebra Bag Charms Kit, create two bag charms: a shooting star and an original unicorn Zebra that you can attach to any bag, backpack, purse, etc. With the Sloth Plush Kit and Giraffe Plush Kit, swe together pre-cut/pre-punched cork fabric, faux leather, and glittery material to make a stuffed sloth and giraffe toy, respectively.
As with previous Alex DIY kits, these kits come with all the materials you'll need, along with instructions. All the pieces you'll be working with for these kits are pre-punched so it's pretty easy to line things up and sew together as you work.
Alex continues to bring the styles that are trending and incorporate them into fashion-forward DIY wearables, toys, and accessories for kids with these kits. If you are/have a crafty kid that likes to sew and get the satisfaction out of making your own playthings, these three kits yield, when complete, results that are instagram-worthy or worthy of sharing any way you wish.
These kits are age-graded for kids 8 and up, but keep in mind, they take time to do so they are best suited for kids that like to tinker and create, those that take pride in making their own accessories, and those that won't become easily frustrated. For example, our own little uni-zebra we put together over a couple days in roughly 3 hours so projects will certainly take some time.
All the pieces you'll be working with for these kits are pre-punched so it's pretty easy to line things up and sew together as you work. The only part we struggled with in terms of the uni-zebra keychain was the placement of the ear over the mane. Here you essentially have to sew the mane between the ear pieces, which can be a bit more tricky to hold everything together as you work.
ALEX does offer some sped up video tutorials for some of these items on its YouTube channel, which can also be helpful to see visually as well.
The sewing needles included are pretty sharp so kids will need to be careful when sewing.
The glitter does shed (A LOT) so be prepared to find glitter lurking days after you've finished your project. We suggest setting up a work-space before starting to help tame the glitter.
