OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Gelli Arts takes the art form of printmaking and made it a bit easier to do while still yielding brilliant, colorful creations.

Gelli Arts' kits and supplies focuses on creating monoprints, one-of-a-kind prints using its unique Gelli Plates. The plates are similar to using gelatin plates for printing only these plates are completely reusable. In our video review, we used Gelli Arts DIY Stamping and Printing Kit, a 5x7 Gelli Art Printing Gelli Plate, extra roller, and Gelli Arts premium acrylic paint set in bright colors.

Getting started is pretty easy with the DIY kits because each comes loaded with everything you'll need including:

  • 5x5 inch Gelli Arts printing plate
  • three one-ounce bottles of Gelli Arts Premium Acrylic Paint
  • 4-inch roller
  • five 4.5x6 inch foam sheets for creating stamps
  • 12 pieces of 5x5 inch parchment paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Yarn
  • Punchinella stencil

How to Use

Begin by removing the protective plastic backing from both sides of your Gelli Art printing plate. Place the plate on a sheet of clean paper. Then select your paint colors. Place a small amount of each color you are using on one side of the plate and use the roller to spread and mix the colors to your liking.

Next, you have a couple different options. The first is the easiest and the simplest way to get started: use different textures, brushes, and your own stencils to press different designs onto the plate. Then grab a sheet of paper and press it onto the plate face down, peeling back slowly to reveal your print.

To make stamps, you can either draw into the foam sheets or create cut outs to use. If you use up all the foam sheets, paper is also a good substitute for stamp making only not as reusable.

To create layered designs, lay precut pieces onto your plate and pressing your design a second time using new colors. This will allow the original print to bleed through only in the covered areas.

In general the instructions were pretty open ended and we actually found Gelli Arts website to be most helpful when getting started. From there though it's ultimately up to the user what to make, which we personally love. No matter what you create, this kit makes printmaking easy to do and it really does achieve some high quality results.

Who It’s For

GelliArts kits are age graded for kids 8 and up, but we think this is one that adults are going to love doing just as much as kids. You don't have to be Picasso to create amazing work using this kit. It's perfect for those looking for more open-ended, hands-on ways to play and get creative.

What To Be Aware Of

If needed, you can tape down the bottom sheet of paper to keep it from sliding.

Using the paints: Gelli Arts paint is water based so it washes off easily. The main DIY kit only comes with three paint colors to get started, but . You really only need a little bit of paint at a time for each print. It goes a long way.

How to Clean:

Clean-up is really easy. Simply run the plates and roller under some water, adding soap if needed to clean off. You may find your plates won't look quite as clean after the first use but you can also use hand sanitizer and/or baby wipes to help clean off any additional staining without affecting the plates for future use.
