OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

For parents whose kids receive an elf visit every holiday season, figuring out social media-worthy elf antics every night can be tiring. But that's why there's a new book and activity kit called The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elves at Play. The 60-page book includes more than 100 quick and easy ideas for your family's elf and 15 tools to make those ideas happen.

Basically, you leave the entire kit out in plain sight for your elf to find. Then he or she will use the tools and picture suggestions in the book to create funny hijinks for kids to find the next morning.

The tools include a candy cane cable, two glacier grips, Christmas climbing boots, a peppermint grappling hook, a holiday harness, a cheery chair, a snowflake swing, a holiday hook, a merry message cube, and five scout elf message cards that can be used with Dry-Erase markers.

Is It Fun?

For families who do The Elf on the Shelf but need a little inspiration for their elf, this book and tools kit will be just the thing to get creative juices flowing. Kids will like all the silly possibilities for their elf and waking up each morning to see just what the elf got up to that night. Parents will like that the picture ideas are pretty easy to replicate using the given tools.

Who It’s For

This is for ages 3 and up, and that's really because the whole Elf on the Shelf tradition is for kids of that age range. But this book is really more of a guide for parents who are (spoiler alert) the magic behind making the elf do all the different things every night.

What To Be Aware Of

The kit includes a 60-page idea book, a candy cane cable, two glacier grips, Christmas climbing boots, a peppermint grappling hook, a holiday harness, a cheery chair, a snowflake swing, a holiday hook, a merry message cube, and five scout elf message cards that can be used with Dry-Erase markers. Markers are not included.

An Elf on the Shelf is sold separately.
