OVERALL EDITOR'S RATING:
What It Is

Star Wars Jedi Challenges is a New Smartphone-Powered Augmented Reality Experience brought to life by Lenovo. Jedi Challenges features a smart phone powered Lenovo Mirage AR headset, Tracking Beacon, Lightsaber controller, and 8-10 hours of Star Wars gameplay depending on how quickly you pass through the different levels. The product is compatible with both Android phones and iPhones.

The Lenovo Mirage Headset is equipped with two built-in fisheye sensors to provide inside-out positional tracking, the headset allows for free and natural motion to move around as you duel or direct forces.

The headset pairs with a high end Lightsaber controller, modeled after the one used by Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Rey. Designed to be a key part of the experience, the Lightsaber acts as a controller, lightsaber and pointer, allowing you to navigate the user interface, with all controls activated with a simple two-button configuration.

Players will test their skills across three different augmented reality-based experiences, each offering multiple levels of game play. Jedi Challenges will introduce an all-new Star Wars character, the Archivist who guides you through the play. The Archivist instructs players in the ways of the Force and the knowledge of the Jedi. Throughout these challenges, users will train to perfect their lightsaber skills by taking on some of the most notable villains from the Star Wars Universe.

Let's start with Lightsaber Battles. With your lightsaber, you can train against Kylo Ren and Darth Vader. The next game is Strategic Combat. Players marshal the forces of the Republic, Rebel Alliance, and Resistance against the might of the Separatists, Empire, and First Order across their living room floors. Holochess is the last game. Holochess was played in both A New Hope and The Force Awakens and has now been brought to life. You direct your holographic alien pieces across the board and try and control the board.

Is It Fun?

Every Star Wars fan in our office wanted to keep this product. This product is very engaging and very hard to put down. With Augmented Reality, you become part of the Star Wars Universe.

The lightsabers were so much fun, blocking what's being fired at you while engaging in lighsaber battles. As you pass certain tasks and levels, you'll get to battle Darth Maul, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. In Strategic Combat, you feel like a general controlling your troops. Holochess brings the game featured in A New Hope and The Force Awakens to life. Is this the best A/R we've ever seen? No. Is this the most fun we've had with an A/R product? Yes!

Who It’s For

This is for fans of Star Wars and those who want to be a Jedi. There is no age grading, but this isn't for young kids as the headset isn't built for small heads, the A/R could make a child a little dizzy, and it could be a little overwhelming. Personally, I think most 10 year olds would have no problem playing, and anyone younger would depend on that individual child.

What To Be Aware Of

Augmented Reality is known to make some people dizzy. I usually get lightheaded from A/R, but didn't experience that with Star Wars Jedi Challenges. You do need an iPhone or Android phone to play, and if you play for an hour(like I did!), you will burn much of your battery life. Be prepared that once you start playing, you won't want to put it down.
